Harlem Shake (PHS AVID Edition) |
Senior Send Off Video Class of 2013 |
What Makes Us...US! The AVID Kumbaya family is one of the most inspiring and wonderful part of the AVID program. This part of the class is where students all find a way to help each other and become more than classmates. It becomes more than a friendship, it becomes a family matter.

The AVID Class of 2013 is not just any ordinary class. Every student in AVID communicates with each other. We help each other with our struggles inside and outside the classrooms. This AVID class is a Kumbaya family, a family that cares for one another.

Our AVID Family
The word Kumbaya means family and family means that nobody gets left behind. In AVID, our fellow classmates are basically family and we look out for each other. All AVID students know that there will always be someone there to help them. However, there is no such thing as a perfect family, and AVID is not the perfect family, but we are perfectly imperfect. Of course, there is always that brother or sister who does not listen or the brother or sister who is always the little angel. Then, you got that parent that will cook you if you have done something bad. However, parents just want the best for their children, and in AVID, your teacher is exactly the same.
As high school passes at the blink of eye, high school graduates may tell stories about their favorite classes, activities, memories, and so on. Yet, how many can say they had a class that felt like a complete family? Hardly any, but the luckily PHS AVID Class of 2013, honestly can. AVID is not just an elective class. It is more of a second home for us. Our AVID class is honestly so comfortable with each other: IT IS A FAMILY!
To walk into Mrs. Forbes's classroom 541, (or Mama Forbes as some of us call her), and feel the sense of complete acceptance is comforting. Our backgrounds may not always be the same, but in this AVID class, we are all one big Kumbaya! Each one accepts and supports one another. In our class, we have been through many hardships from whining about the loads of homework we get to making homemade "Get well cards" for classmates that are ill. Yes, we do get a lot of homework, but it is okay because the laughs and good times make up for it.
Although it might be just a class to people on the outside, to us, the insiders, it is OUR KUMBAYA! People may bash AVID, but we do not care because we know what AVID really is, Which is us! But what is "US"? "Us" is the class of 27 students who strive for similar goals, goals to make something of ourselves. We go down the same road as the year passes, and we do it together. As a Kumbaya, we help each other through each others' paths, and further down the journey, we will look back and be able to say we had a class called AVID, with an awesome mentor our "Mama Forbes♥" and great classmates, that was and forever will be our second family. Our Kumbaya!☺
